Common auto electrical jobs in Ross

Ross is named after John Ross, who explored the area in 1870 to find a route through the MacDonnell Ranges for the Overland Telegraph Line. Today the Ross Highway starts here and runs east about 90 kilometres, past Emily and Jessie Gaps, Corroboree Rock and Trephina Gorge, to Ross River and Arltunga.

East MacDonnells touring setups

The Ross Highway is sealed as far as Ross River, but beyond that it's unsealed towards Arltunga, and side tracks to places like N'Dhala Gorge are rougher still. A 4WD heading out from Ross for a few days needs a reliable auxiliary battery, secure mounts and wiring that can take corrugations. A DC-DC charger keeps the fridge battery topped up on the drive. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the setup.

Camper trailers off the bitumen

Camper trailers that head down the unsealed section past Ross River take a pounding. Plugs fill with dust, lights rattle loose and the charging cable to the camper can chafe through where it runs along the drawbar. Checking the 12-pin or Anderson connection, cleaning the pins and securing the cable with proper clamps prevents most problems. Our guide on why trailer lights aren't working is useful for roadside checks.

UHF radios for remote tracks

Mobile phone coverage drops out quickly once you head east along the ranges, and a UHF radio is a sensible addition for anyone touring from Ross. It should be wired with a direct, fused feed and a solid earth so it works reliably and doesn't introduce noise. Mount the aerial securely so it doesn't shake loose on corrugations. Tell someone your route before you go, and test the radio on a local channel before leaving home.

Sheds, mice and parked 4WDs

Many Ross properties have sheds where 4WDs and campers sit between trips. Mice and rats move in and chew wiring under the bonnet and in camper trailer looms. A vehicle that won't start after sitting for a month, or a camper with dead lights, may have rodent damage. Our guide on rodent damage to car wiring explains signs and prevention.

Ross auto electrical questions

Is the Ross Highway sealed all the way to Arltunga?

No. It's sealed from the Stuart Highway to Ross River, then continues as an unsealed road to the Arltunga Historical Reserve. Conditions on the unsealed section change with the weather, so check before you go and make sure your vehicle's electrics and battery mounts are up to rough roads.

Do I need a DC-DC charger for a camper trailer?

If your tow vehicle has a smart alternator, or the cable run to the camper is long, a DC-DC charger is the best way to make sure the camper battery actually charges while driving. Older vehicles with fixed-voltage alternators may cope with a heavy direct cable, but a DC-DC charger is still more reliable.

Local tip for Ross

Before heading out the Ross Highway for a weekend, check that your fridge battery is fully charged at home rather than relying on the drive to top it up. It's a short run on the sealed section, often not long enough to recharge a flat auxiliary battery, especially in summer heat.
