East Side

The East Side area covers the Alice Springs suburbs across the Todd River from the CBD: East Side, Sadadeen, Mount Johns and Desert Springs. The work is mostly household cars, 4WDs and caravans, plus the electrical problems that come with crossing a river that floods now and then.

Suburbs in East Side

East of the Todd River, these suburbs grew from the early 1960s subdivisions that gave East Side its name. East Side and Sadadeen are established family streets under the Sadadeen Range. Mount Johns has newer housing and units towards the ranges, and Desert Springs wraps around the Alice Springs Golf Club. The Todd is usually a dry sandy bed, but heavy rain can close the causeways, as in November 2021 when a car was swept off the Undoolya Causeway. Heat, dust and the occasional flood shape the work here.

Common auto electrical jobs in East Side

The east side is residential, but the river crossings and long hot summers give it its own set of problems. These are the jobs that come up most often.

Water damage after a Todd River flood

The Todd River runs only after heavy rain, but when it does, causeways become dangerous. In November 2021, more than 100 millimetres fell at the airport in 24 hours and a sedan was swept off the Undoolya Causeway. Any vehicle driven through floodwater can end up with water in connectors, the starter motor, sensors and the cabin floor loom. Problems may appear days later. Never drive into floodwater. If a car has been in water, get the electrics checked before relying on it.

Battery life in a hot climate

Alice Springs averages only around 280 millimetres of rain a year, and summers are long and hot. That heat cuts battery life sharply. Signs of a tired battery include slow cranking, a car that struggles after sitting for a weekend, or electrical glitches when starting. A battery test takes minutes and tells you whether to replace it before it strands you. Our guide on how to replace a car battery covers the job step by step.

Caravans ready for the cooler months

When the weather cools, many east side households head off with a caravan or camper. A van that sat through summer may have a flat or damaged battery, dusty plugs and a charging circuit that no longer works. A pre-trip check of the 12-pin plug, the van battery and the charging voltage at the van end saves trouble later. Our guide on how to install an electric brake controller helps if the van needs one.
