Common auto electrical jobs in The Gap

The Gap takes its name from Heavitree Gap, the break in the MacDonnell Ranges that carries the Stuart Highway, the railway and the Todd River out to the south. It's an established suburb, and it's the last stretch of town before the long run south.

Pre-trip checks before heading south

From The Gap, the Stuart Highway runs south through Heavitree Gap and on towards Erldunda, roughly 200 kilometres away, where the Lasseter Highway turns off for Uluru. There isn't much in between. Before a long trip, check the battery, the alternator output, the cooling fan and every light. A charging fault that is only an annoyance in town becomes a real problem on an empty highway. Our guide on how to know if your alternator needs replacing lists the warning signs.

Indicators flashing fast

Older family cars in The Gap often get LED globes fitted as cheap upgrades, and the most common side effect is indicators that flash too fast. That happens because the flasher relay reads the lower current as a blown globe. A blown globe on one corner causes the same symptom. Check all four corners first, then consider a load resistor or an LED-compatible flasher. Our guide on why indicators flash fast explains the fix.

Trailer lights for the run out of town

Box trailers, camper trailers and caravans heading south through Heavitree Gap depend on trailer lights that actually work. Dust gets into plugs and globe holders, and corrugated roads shake connections loose. The usual faults are one dead light, crossed indicators or lights that only work when the plug is wiggled. Cleaning the pins and checking the earth wire fixes many of them. Our guide on why trailer lights aren't working walks through it step by step.

Cooling fans on older cars

Older cars work hard in Alice Springs summers, and a failed radiator or condenser fan is one of the most common electrical faults. If the temperature gauge climbs while idling at traffic lights, or the air conditioning goes warm when stationary but cools when moving, suspect the fan, its relay or its fuse. Catching it early avoids an overheated engine. Fan motors, relays and temperature switches are all straightforward to test with a multimeter.

The Gap auto electrical questions

What should I check before driving south from Alice Springs?

Check the battery condition, the alternator charging voltage, the cooling fan, all lights and any trailer wiring. Carry a spare fuse kit and a jump starter. Services are spread out along the Stuart Highway, so it's worth fixing small electrical faults before you leave rather than hoping they last the distance.

Can LED globes cause problems in an older car?

They can. Indicators may flash fast, some cars show bulb-out warnings, and cheap LED headlight globes can scatter light badly in housings designed for halogen. LED globes made for the right fitting and approved for road use work fine. If unsure, ask an auto electrician to check the car's circuits first.

Local tip for The Gap

Heavitree Gap is the narrow point where the highway, the railway and the Todd River share the same gap in the ranges. If you're heading south for a long drive, do your battery and lights check in town the day before, not on the morning you leave. That gives you time to sort a fault without delaying the trip.
